Roots, Blues & Originals

Lowry Hamner

A Mississippi native, Lowry Hamner writes and performs original and traditional music in the “Americana” genre, the crossroads where the southern musical forms of blues, rock, folk, and country meet.

Hammer’s musical journey is deeply rooted in the Mississippi music scene past and present, in a career of powerful promise and recognition. He recorded sessions for Sam Phillips, of Elvis Presley fame, and Ray Harris, of Hi Records in Memphis. Phillips once told Hamner, “You don’t sing like Elvis, but you’re the best songwriter I’ve heard in ten years.”

Originally from Terry, Mississippi, Lowry spent his childhood living in various places, including Colorado, Texas, Louisiana, and Europe, until high school when the family moved to Gulfport, Mississippi and settled. Lowry kept moving. It was in the vibrant Meridian, Mississippi music scene, among such compatriots as Chris Ethridge, Steve Forbert,  and Paul Davis that Hamner founded the band, The Cryers. After completing demos in Nashville with Kyle Lehning, who later produced Randy Travis, opportunities as a solo artist opened up for Hamner, but his commitment to The Cryers instead motivated a move to New York City’s East Village.

Playing such legendary New York clubs as CBGB’s and Max’s Kansas City led to Hamner and The Cryers being signed to Mercury Records by Steve Katz of Blood, Sweat and Tears, and The Blues Project fame. Columbia recording artist Willie Nile  included one of Hamner’s songs on his record “Places I Have Never Been.” Hamner’s  song “Shake It Up” was re-released as the title track on a  Rhino Records compilation.

Lowry subsequently recorded “Secrets of the Heart,” his first solo recording, which garnered significant airplay throughout the northeast and Europe. Recently, at the request of Woody Guthrie’s daughter, Nora Guthrie, Lowry put one of Woody Guthrie’s unrecorded lyrics to music, and recorded the song, “Union Air In Union Square,” for the project, “My Name Is New York.”  He has just released his second solo album, “American Dreaming”, and is in the final stages of completing the writing portion for it’s follow-up. He recently partnered with Songs Publishing in New York City in a co-publishing deal representing the Cryer’s catalogue. As Lowry says, “It’s always been about the songs.”
